Insulated Splices FAQ

1. What types of insulated splices do you carry?

Heat-shrink butt splices, step-down butt splices, parallel splices, and pigtail splices in nylon, PVC, and dual-wall polyolefin with adhesive-lined tubing.

2. Which wire gauges are covered?

Full range from 22–10 AWG (red = 22-18, blue = 16-14, yellow = 12-10). Step-down versions join dissimilar gauges (e.g., 12 AWG to 16 AWG).

3. What temperature and voltage ratings?

105 °C continuous, 600 V max for building wire, and 1,000 V for signs/fixtures per UL 486A-486C.

4. Are these splices UL listed?

Yes—file E520482 covers nylon-insulated and heat-shrink styles; UL mark is printed on the product bag.

5. Nylon vs. PVC vs. heat-shrink—what’s best?

Nylon: highest vibration resistance. PVC: economy indoor jobs. Heat-shrink dual-wall: waterproof IP67 seal with melt-bond adhesive—ideal for marine/automotive.

6. What crimp tool should I use?

A ratcheting full-cycle crimper with color-coded dies (red/blue/yellow). Heat-shrink styles need a “non-insulated + insulated” hex or dimple die.

7. Do heat-shrink splices require adhesive-lined tubing?

Ours include built-in adhesive; simply crimp, then shrink until clear tubing melts adhesive and seals the joint.

8. Shrink ratio?

2:1 for standard dual-wall polyolefin; shrinks at 120 °C, fully recovered by 200 °C.

9. Can I solder instead of crimping?

No—UL listing is for crimp termination only. Solder may wick and create a stress point.

10. Are the splices RoHS / REACH compliant?

Yes—lead-free copper barrels, halogen-free insulation; certification available on request.

11. What barrel material is used?

Seamless electrolytic tinned-copper for corrosion resistance and low resistance (<0.9 mΩ across joint).

12. How much pull-out force do they withstand?

>70 lb for 12 AWG yellow; exceeds UL 486A minimums by 20 %.

13. Can I use them on automotive GPT wire?

Yes—meets SAE J163 standard for primary wire; heat-shrink style adds moisture seal for under-hood or trailer wiring.

14. Do step-down splices derate current?

No—current rating follows the smaller conductor’s ampacity; barrel wall thickness maintains amp capacity.

15. Operating temperature after shrink?

-55 °C to +125 °C once adhesive cures.
