Rubber gloves are shock protection only. Wear leather protectors over them for cuts, abrasion and arc exposure; the protector also extends the rubber glove's life. Inspect by inflation before every use, and have them dielectrically retested every six months per OSHA 1910.137. Bi-color black-over-yellow gloves make cuts visible on inspection.

Insulated gloves stop shock; arc-rated clothing stops the heat of an arc, measured in cal/cm². NFPA 70E PPE Category 1 is 4 cal, Category 2 is 8 cal, which covers most 480 V panel work with the door open. An 8 cal long-sleeve shirt, a 12 cal face shield on a Class E hard hat, safety glasses and voltage-rated gloves is the standard Category 2 kit. Lockout-tagout comes first; PPE is for the exposure LOTO can't remove, which is testing and troubleshooting live.
