1500 V PV Strings, MC4 Evo2 and the Connector Mixing Problem: What Solar Installers Should Know in 2026

Three things landed at once for PV installers: module makers standardized on 1500 V DC ratings even for residential-class panels, Stäubli released the MC4 Evo2 as the successor to the original MC4, and the 2023 and 2026 NEC editions made the connector-mixing rule explicit. Together they change what goes in the truck.

NEC 690.33(C): no mixing, and the inspector means it

690.33(C) requires that mating PV connectors be listed together, either the same manufacturer or a combination the manufacturer has specifically listed as intermateable. Field practice used to be that any MC4-style connector mated with any other. That is now a red tag, and fire investigations have repeatedly traced rooftop arc faults to cross-mated connectors with slightly different contact geometry. The fix is procedural: buy the jumper and the loose connectors from the same listed family, and label the combiner side so the next tech does the same.

What Evo2 changes

The MC4 Evo2 keeps the MC4 footprint but adds a locking sleeve that needs the unlocking tool, a higher-temperature housing, 1500 V DC and 30 A ratings, and UL 6703 listing for 8 to 10 AWG in addition to 10 to 12 AWG. Original MC4 (1000 V) and Evo2 are listed as intermateable by Stäubli, which is why an Evo2 jumper into an older module lead is acceptable where a third-party 1000 V connector would not be. 1500 V and the wire

At 1500 V the PV wire must be listed for 2000 V (UL 4703 2 kV) and the combiner, fuses and disconnects rated 1500 V DC. 10 AWG PV wire is fine for 30 A strings, but voltage drop on the long home run is the reason to step to 8 AWG on runs past about 60 ft one way at 48 V nominal battery systems, or 200 ft on 600 V strings. Made-to-length MC4 jumpers from 5 to 100 ft in 10 AWG avoid field crimps entirely.

Combiners, fuses and rapid shutdown

Strings over 1000 V need 1500 V DC fuses (typically 15 A gPV) in a combiner listed to UL 1741. Two-string systems with matched modules can skip the fuses under 690.9(A) exception, but three or more strings in parallel need them. Rapid shutdown under 690.12 remains module-level for rooftop arrays; ground-mount arrays more than 1 ft from the building only need array-level shutdown. IP65 combiners in 1 to 6 string with fused inputs and a DC isolator cover the common cases.

Grounding the array

Module frames bond through WEEB or listed grounding clips to a copper or AL9CU grounding bar; the bar ties to the equipment grounding conductor. Tinned copper lugs and stainless hardware on the frames stop the galvanic corrosion that shows up in year three on coastal roofs. Parts list for a 1500 V residential string

  • MC4 Evo2 connector pairs, 10 to 12 AWG, plus the Evo2 unlocking tool
  • 10 AWG UL 4703 2 kV PV wire, red and black, or made-to-length jumpers
  • 1500 V DC 15 A gPV fuses and holders, or a fused combiner
  • 1500 V DC disconnect, NEMA 4X
  • Grounding bar, bonding clips, tinned lugs and stainless hardware
  • MC4 crimper and spanner set for the one field termination you will inevitably need
