Cat6 vs Cat6A vs Cat8 in 2026: Which Cable Actually Pays Off for Offices, Wi-Fi 7 and Server Rooms

Three things changed the category cable decision in the last two years: Wi-Fi 7 access points that want 10 Gbps uplinks, 2.5G and 5G Ethernet ports on ordinary desktops, and 90 W PoE++ pushing more heat into bundles. Here is how the three categories compare on the numbers that matter, and where each one is still the right buy.

Cat6: still the right answer for most drops
A 2.5GBASE-T desktop link runs 100 m on Cat6 with margin. Cameras, VoIP phones, printers and access control do not need more. Buy solid bare copper Cat6 in the jacket the space demands: CMR for riser, CMP for plenum ceilings. Skip CCA for anything carrying PoE; the higher resistance heats the bundle and trips the PSE current limit on long runs.
Cat6A: the access point and PoE++ cable
Wi-Fi 7 tri-band APs are shipping with 10G ports, and vendors are recommending 10G uplinks to use them. That is a 100 m 10GBASE-T requirement, and only Cat6A guarantees it in a full bundle. Cat6A also has the larger conductor and OD that keep temperature rise inside the TIA 5 degree C limit on 90 W PoE++ bundles of 24 or more. Rule of thumb from the field: every AP drop, every conference room and every drop that might become an AP gets Cat6A; the rest can stay Cat6.
Cat8: 30 m, top of rack, and nothing else
Cat8 exists to replace DAC and short fiber between servers and switches at 25G and 40G. It is limited to 30 m channel, it must be shielded end to end with bonded jacks, and it costs three to four times Cat6A. Running it to a desk is wasted money; running it 20 m from a patch panel to a 25G switch instead of a DAC that only comes in 5 m lengths is exactly what it is for. Cost per drop, installed
Using 2026 material pricing and a 60 m average run: Cat6 CMR lands at roughly $38 to $45 per drop in cable, jacks and plate; Cat6A CMR about $55 to $70; Cat6A CMP $75 to $95. Labor is the same for Cat6 and Cat6A. The delta on a 200-drop office is around $4,000, which is less than the cost of re-pulling twenty AP drops in three years.
Patch cords
Match the cord to the horizontal: a Cat6 cord on a Cat6A link limits the channel to Cat6. For 10G drops use Cat6A cords; for everything else Cat6 550 MHz snagless in six colors keeps the rack readable. Buy 28 AWG slim cords only where density demands it and keep them under 15 ft.
