Starlink for Fleets and Work Trucks: The Four-Part Hardwire Kit, Roof Mounts at Highway Speed, and What Upfitters Spec

When a fleet manager puts Starlink on twenty trucks, the dish is the cheap part. The install is what decides whether it is still working in eighteen months. Upfitters that do this at volume have converged on the same four pieces, and they spec them in a kit so every truck gets the same build.

In-motion, what the plan allows

Starlink permits in-motion use on Mini and Standard dishes with the Mobile Priority (Roam) plans and a Starlink-approved fixed mount arrangement; using a magnetic or suction mount while driving voids the warranty and, at 70 mph, launches the dish. Upfitters put the fixed mount on a bracket that clears the roof by 2 in for airflow and tilts 9 degrees forward.

Wiring spec for the upfit sheet

  • Feed from the ignition-switched or always-on bus per fleet policy; most choose always-on with a 30-minute timer so crews get internet with the engine off
  • 15 A fuse at the source on 12 V, 7.5 A on 24 V; 12 AWG GXL or TXL, loomed, to the injector
  • Injector mounted in the cab, out of the footwell, on a bracket; RJ45 to the telematics router WAN
  • Roof cable in split loom, edge-protected at the pass-through, drip loop before the socket
  • Chassis bond 10 AWG from the mount plate and the socket plate
  • Label the fuse and the breaker; put the SN of the dish in the vehicle file

Kit pricing

Mount, injector, socket, fuse holder, wire and terminals come to about $200 per vehicle at contractor pricing and under $170 at fleet pricing on 25 kits, packed one vehicle per box with the wiring sheet inside. That is what upfitters want: one part number, one box, one drawing.
