Starlink on a Boat: Mounting, 12 V Power, Cable Entry and Bonding for Mini and Gen3 Marine Installs

Starlink is now standard on cruising sailboats, sportfishers and workboats, and most of them are wired the way the dish came out of the box: a 120 V brick on an inverter and a cable through a hatch. That works until the first offshore night with spray. Here is the marine install that survives.
Mini or Gen3 on a boat
The Mini draws 25 to 40 W, runs on 12 V directly, and its 8 x 11 in footprint fits a rail or a radar arch. The Standard Gen3 draws 75 to 100 W, needs 48 to 57 V PoE, and wants a flat area the size of a hatch. For anything under 45 ft, the Mini on a fixed mount is the right call; the Gen3 belongs on trawlers and sportfishers with a hardtop and a real DC system. Starlink's own in-motion rule applies to both: Mini and Standard are approved for in-motion use on the Mobile Priority plans, and the mount has to be rigid, not suction.
Mounting
- Rail or arch: the fixed mount kit on a 1 in or 1-1/4 in rail clamp, stainless hardware, sealing washers. Keep the dish clear of the radar beam and the VHF antenna's near field; 3 ft from either is enough.
- Hardtop or deck: the fixed mount through-bolted with a backing plate, 3M 4200 under the base. Never 5200 on anything you might remove.
- Not on a boat: magnetic mounts have nothing to grip on fiberglass or aluminum; suction lets go in a seaway.
Power from the house bank
Skip the inverter. The Mini runs from the 100 W 12/24 V charger into a DC pass-through socket at the helm, or hardwired through a 12 V to 48 V PoE injector so one cable goes topside. Either way: fuse within 7 in of the positive bus, 10 A for the Mini, 15 A for a Gen3 injector; tinned copper conductor per ABYC E-11, 12 AWG for runs to 20 ft, 10 AWG beyond; ring terminals with heat-shrink, no bare wire under a screw. Budget 30 Ah per night for the Mini and 90 Ah for a Gen3 on a 12 V bank, and put the dish on its own breaker on the DC panel so it is a switch, not an unplug.
Getting the cable below
A deck pass-through that stays dry for five years is the whole job. The IP68 Cat6 bulkhead socket mounts in a 1-1/2 in hole through the coaming or hardtop with its gasket and lets the dish cable plug in topside and a patch cable run below; capped when the dish is stowed. For a permanent Mini install, the cable entry bushing with a drip loop and a bead of 4200 is the alternative. Either one goes on a vertical or under-hang surface where water runs off, never on the flat of the deck.
Bonding
ABYC E-11 and TE-4: the mount, the metal socket plate and the injector chassis bond to the DC negative bus with green 10 AWG, not to the underwater bonding system for through-hulls. A dish on an arch is the highest point on most boats; a listed Ethernet surge protector at the entry gives a lightning-induced surge a path that isn't the router. On aluminum boats isolate the stainless mount from the hull with a nylon washer set to stop galvanic action.
