Starlink Mini on 12 V: Fusing, Wire Gauge, Cable Entry and Grounding for RV, Van and Boat Installs

The Starlink Mini ships with a USB-C power brick meant for a wall outlet. In an RV, van or boat that means running an inverter around the clock to power a 25 to 40 W load, which wastes 15 to 25 percent of the battery as heat and adds a failure point. A native 12 V install is cheaper, quieter and more reliable. Here is the whole job.

2. Fuse at the source

The Mini draws up to 5 A at 12 V through the car charger, about 8 A peak through a converter during acquisition. Fuse to protect the wire, not the load: a 15 A blade fuse within 7 in of the battery positive covers 14 AWG and 12 AWG. On a 24 V truck system the current halves, so 7.5 A is enough. Feed from the house bank or a fused distribution block, never from an ignition-switched accessory circuit that drops when the engine is off.

3. Size the wire

That keeps voltage drop under 3 percent at 8 A. Undersized wire is the most common cause of a Mini that reboots when the fridge compressor starts. On boats use tinned copper per ABYC E-11 and ring terminals at the bus, not bare wire under a screw.

4. Get the cable through the wall

Three ways, in order of finish quality:

• Pass-through socket. A sealed bulkhead jack: the DC power socket for the Mini's 5521 power lead, or the IP68 Cat6 socket for a Standard dish. Cut the hole, mount, plug in outside and inside. The dish cable never enters the vehicle and the cap seals the port when the dish is stowed.
• Cable entry bushing. The Cat6 bushing clamps the jacket and puts a drip loop outside. Seal the flange with self-leveling lap sealant on rubber roofs; silicone peels.
• Window or slide seal. Fine for a weekend; the seal fails, the cable chafes, and you will redo it.

5. Add a switch

A 5-pin illuminated rocker in the DC panel gives you a real dish kill switch and a visible indicator. Rebooting the dish becomes a flip instead of a trip outside to unplug a connector.

6. Bond and ground

On a metal-body vehicle, bond the mount plate and any metal wall socket to the chassis with a 10 AWG jumper and a ring terminal to a clean screw; that gives static and lightning-induced surges a path that isn't the Ethernet shield. On a boat, bond to the DC negative bus per ABYC E-11, not to the bonding system for underwater metals. On fiberglass and wood there is nothing to bond to; keep the DC negative run short and rely on the converter's isolation.

7. Mount

Steel roof and you drive with the dish up: 55 lb magnetic mount, tethered. Fiberglass or aluminum: fixed kit with sealing washers, or the suction kit if you can't drill. Never mount inside framing; drill on a flat section and check for wiring behind it.
