Starlink Mini vs Standard Gen3 for an RV, Van or Boat: Power Draw, Speed, Mounting, Cost and Which One to Buy

Most mobile buyers now choose between the Starlink Mini and the Standard Gen3 (the kickstand dish). They are different products with different install hardware, and the wrong choice shows up as a dead battery or a dish that will not fit. Here is the comparison from the install side.

Where the Mini wins

Anything on 12 V. A van, a small RV, a sailboat, a work truck or a job trailer runs the Mini from the house battery with a 100 W charger or a hardwired injector and no inverter, at a third of the Gen3's power. It fits a rail or a roof rack, it packs in a hard case, and a 95 Wh battery bank runs it three hours away from the vehicle. For most mobile users the Mini's 100 Mbps is more than the cell hotspot it replaces.

Where the Gen3 wins

Throughput and Wi-Fi. A family RV with four devices streaming, a live-aboard working full time, or a cabin used as a home office gets the Gen3's higher speed and its Wi-Fi 6 mesh router. It needs a real DC system: a 200 Ah or larger bank, an inverter or a 100 W DC-to-56 V injector, and a flat mounting area. The proprietary cable means the only clean way through a wall is the Cat6 bulkhead socket, which also lets you swap to an ordinary patch cable inside.

Install hardware, both dishes
