Insulated Multi-Tap Connector Selection Guide | Ports, Entry Style & Conductor Range

Choosing an insulated multi-tap comes down to three decisions: conductor range, port count, and entry style. Get all three right and the install is a five-minute job; get one wrong and you're driving back to the supply house. Here's how to decide, with the full Conversions Tech line mapped to each choice.

Decision 1 — Conductor Range

Every port accepts the full range printed on the connector (e.g., 6 AWG–350 MCM). Choose the smallest connector whose range covers your largest AND smallest conductor — an oversized port on a small conductor cannot be torqued reliably. Ranges in the CT line run 14–4 AWG (branch circuits and lighting) through 1/0–750 MCM (service and feeder work).

Decision 2 — Port Count

Ports Typical Use
2-port Simple tap: one main, one tap conductor — service taps, fixture whips, splice repairs
3-port One main in/out plus one tap — mid-run taps without cutting the main
4-port Distribution blocks: one feed to multiple loads — panels, gutter distribution, solar combiners

Decision 3 — Entry Style

Entry When to Use
Single-side All conductors approach from one direction — panel edges, gutter ends, enclosure walls
Dual-side Conductors from both directions — through-runs, mid-gutter taps, tight enclosures
Offset (zig-zag) In-line taps where conductors must stay parallel — raceway and tray work
In-line splice Straight-through splice or reducer of two conductors — repair and transition work
