NEMA Enclosure Ratings Explained: 1, 3R, 3, 3X, 4, 4X, 6, 12 and 13, IP Equivalents, and Which Rating Each Location Needs

Summary: NEMA 250 rates enclosures by what they keep out. Type 1 is indoor, incidental contact only. Type 3R is outdoor, rain and sleet, with drainage; it is the rating on most residential disconnects and meter bases. Type 3 and 3S add windblown dust; 3X, 4X and 6P add corrosion resistance. Type 4 is outdoor hose-directed water and windblown dust, required for washdown and car washes. Type 4X is Type 4 plus corrosion resistance, the rating for marine, coastal, food processing, pools and wastewater. Type 6 and 6P are temporary and prolonged submersion. Type 12 is indoor dust, dripping non-corrosive liquid and oil, the industrial control panel standard. Type 13 adds oil and coolant spray for machine tools. Approximate IP equivalents: 3R about IP24, 4 about IP66, 4X about IP66 plus corrosion, 6 about IP67, 12 about IP54; the conversion works one way only, NEMA to IP, because NEMA adds corrosion, icing and construction tests IP does not have.

Why NEMA and IP do not convert both ways
IP (IEC 60529) tests only solid and liquid ingress. NEMA 250 also tests corrosion (salt spray for X types), external icing (3, 3S, 4, 4X, 6), gasket aging, and construction details like door hardware and drainage. A NEMA 4X enclosure meets IP66; an IP66 enclosure does not automatically meet NEMA 4X, because it may have failed or never taken the corrosion and ice tests. Specify NEMA for US installations and read IP as a supporting number.

Material and rating
- Painted steel: Types 1, 3R, 12, 4. Not 4X; paint chips and rusts.
- 304 stainless: 4X for most environments; 316 for salt water and chlorides.
- Fiberglass (SMC): 4X, 3R; excellent chemical resistance; UV-stable grades for outdoor.
- Polycarbonate: 4X, 6P; impact resistant, clear covers available; check UV rating outdoors.
- Aluminum: 4X copper-free for marine; 3R and 4 generally.
Conduit entries and hubs must keep the rating: a raintight hub for 3R and 4, a sealed 4X hub for 4X; a knockout punched in the top of a 3R box without a raintight fitting downgrades it to Type 1.

What is the difference between NEMA 3R and NEMA 4? 3R keeps out rain and sleet and has drainage but is not dust-tight or hose-proof; 4 is dust-tight and withstands hose-directed water. 4X adds corrosion resistance.
Is NEMA 4X the same as IP66? A 4X enclosure meets IP66 and adds corrosion and icing tests. An IP66 enclosure is not automatically 4X.
Can a NEMA 3R disconnect be used at a pool? It meets the minimum, but chlorine corrodes painted steel quickly; 4X is the durable choice and many AHJs require it.
What rating for an industrial control panel? NEMA 12 indoors; NEMA 4 or 4X where it will be hosed down or is outdoors.
