How to Install Insulated Multi-Tap Connectors | Torque, Strip Length & NEC 110.14

Insulated multi-tap connectors (Polaris-type) are set-screw connectors with a factory-insulated housing — no taping, no dies, no crimping tools. Installed correctly, they provide a code-compliant, re-enterable termination for copper and aluminum conductors from 14 AWG to 750 MCM. This guide covers the full procedure, torque requirements, and the code context an inspector will check.

Before You Start

You need: the correctly sized connector, a wire stripper for the conductor gauge, a calibrated torque tool with the hex bit size marked on the connector, oxide inhibitor for aluminum conductors, and lockout/tagout equipment. Installation Steps

De-energize and verify

Lock out / tag out the circuit and verify zero energy with a rated tester before touching conductors. Insulated multi-taps are for installation on de-energized circuits only.

Select the correct connector

Match conductor size to the port range printed on the connector, confirm port count, and pick the entry style your routing needs — single-side for panel-edge work, dual-side for through-runs, offset for in-line taps. See the Selection Guide.

Strip to barrel depth

Strip insulation to the strip length molded on the connector body — typically the full barrel depth. Do not nick strands; do not leave exposed conductor outside the housing.

Prepare aluminum conductors

For aluminum, abrade the contact surface and apply an oxide-inhibiting compound rated for the application, then insert immediately. Copper conductors may be inserted clean and dry.

Insert fully and seat

Insert the conductor until it bottoms in the port. The insulated housing should overlap the conductor insulation with no bare copper or aluminum visible.

Torque to the marked value

Tighten each set screw with the correct hex size to the torque value stamped on the connector body. NEC 110.14(D) requires tightening to the marked torque with a calibrated tool — do not guess by feel.

Re-check after seating

After torquing all ports, re-verify each screw at the marked value. Multi-strand conductors seat under initial torque and can relax.

Inspect and close up

Confirm full insulation overlap, no stray strands, and adequate bend radius. The connector needs no additional taping when conductor insulation is fully covered by the housing.

Torque: What the Code Requires

NEC 110.14(D) requires terminations to be tightened to the manufacturer-marked torque using an appropriate tool. Every Conversions Tech insulated tap has its torque value and hex size molded into the housing next to each port — use that number, not a generic chart. Typical hex sizes run 1/8″ on 14–4 AWG ports up to 3/8″ and larger on MCM ports.

Inspection tip: the two findings that fail insulated tap installs are visible conductor outside the housing (wrong strip length) and undocumented torque. Strip to the molded mark, torque to the molded value, and note the torque tool used on your inspection paperwork.

Aluminum Conductor Rules

Dual-rated AL9CU means the connector is listed for both metals — but aluminum still requires surface prep. Abrade to break the oxide layer, apply inhibitor, insert immediately, and never re-use a port that previously held a different metal without cleaning. Mixed copper and aluminum in the same connector is permitted only where the listing allows it and the conductors are in separate ports.

When to Re-Torque and Re-Enter

Insulated multi-taps are re-enterable: back out the set screw, remove or add a conductor, and re-torque. After any re-entry, re-verify torque on every port in the housing, not just the one you touched. For maintenance programs, thermal imaging under load is the fastest way to catch a loose port.
