Compression Lugs vs Mechanical Lugs: What UL 486A/B, NEC 110.14 and Your Inspector Actually Require

The question comes up on every service and every switchgear job: can I use a mechanical (set-screw) lug here, or does this have to be crimped? The code answer lives in NEC 110.14 and the listing in UL 486A/B. The practical answer depends on conductor type, vibration and whether anyone will ever need to take it apart.
What the code says
NEC 110.14(A) requires terminals to be listed for the conductor material and, for stranded conductors, identified for the class of stranding. UL 486A (copper) and 486B (aluminum) list both compression and mechanical connectors; neither is inherently non-compliant. The NEC does not say compression only anywhere except for grounding electrode conductor connections that are buried or encased (250.64(C), 250.70), which must be irreversible compression or exothermic.
Where compression is the right call
- Fine-strand conductors. Welding cable, DLO and battery cable (Class I, K and M stranding) do not hold in a standard set-screw lug; strands extrude and the connection loosens. Use a long-barrel compression lug listed for flex stranding.
- Vibration. Generators, transfer switches, vehicles, marine. Compression does not back off.
- Buried or encased grounding. Required by code, as above.
- Anything inspected once and never touched again. Bus duct taps, transformer secondaries, utility-side service conductors.
Where mechanical is fine, and often better
- Panelboard and breaker terminations on Class B stranded THHN, where the lug ships with the gear.
- Temporary power and anything that will be reconfigured.
- Aluminum feeders, using a dual-rated AL9CU mechanical lug with oxide inhibitor. Compression on aluminum is fine too, but the die must be the aluminum-specific size.
Reading the die color code
Compression lugs carry a die index number and a color band. The index matches the crimper die: for 12-ton hydraulic tools, 4/0 AWG copper is die 87 (pink), 250 kcmil is 99 (blue), 350 kcmil is 106 (brown), 500 kcmil is 115 (purple). The band on the barrel is the same color as the die that makes the listed crimp. Color codes are standardized across Burndy, Thomas and Betts, Panduit and CT; our die sets are marked with both the index and the color.
Long barrel or short barrel
Short barrel takes one crimp and is listed for Class B and C stranding. Long barrel takes two crimps and is listed for Class B through M, which is why it is the default for battery, welding and fine-strand locomotive cable, and why many utilities specify it everywhere. At $0.30 to $1.50 more per lug the long barrel is cheap insurance on anything that vibrates.

Two-hole lugs and NEMA spacing
Switchgear and busbar terminations above 250 kcmil are usually specified two-hole on NEMA 1 in spacing to resist rotation under fault. Check whether the gear wants 1 in or 1-3/4 in spacing before ordering; both are stocked in two-hole compression.
