HDMI Keystone Jack: The Right Way to Run In-Wall HDMI

Running HDMI in the wall and terminating with keystone jacks is the cleanest way to connect AV equipment — no exposed cables, no adapters, just a professional HDMI port on the wall wherever you need it. Here's how to do it right.

What an HDMI Keystone Jack Does

An HDMI keystone jack is a female-to-female HDMI coupler in the standard keystone form factor. You run HDMI cable through the wall, connect to the jack on each end, and the keystones snap into wall plates at both the source and display locations. The result is two HDMI ports on the wall — one near your device, one near your display — connected by an in-wall HDMI cable.

Cable Length and 4K Compatibility

This is where most DIY installations go wrong. HDMI is not rated for unlimited cable lengths, and the introduction of 4K significantly reduced effective maximum distances.

  • 1080p runs: Passive HDMI cable up to 25 feet (7.5m) is reliable in most installations with a quality cable. Up to 50 feet is possible with premium cables in controlled conditions.
  • 4K @ 30Hz runs: Passive cable up to 15 feet (4.5m) reliably. Beyond 15 feet, results vary significantly by cable quality.
  • 4K @ 60Hz runs: Premium certified HDMI 2.0 cables up to 10 feet (3m) passive. Beyond that, an active HDMI cable or HDMI over Cat6 extender is the reliable solution.
  • Beyond 25 feet for any 4K resolution: Use an active HDMI cable (has a directional signal booster in the connector) or an HDMI-over-Cat6 balun system.

Using Keystone Jacks with Active HDMI Cables

Active HDMI cables are directional — one end is labeled "source" and must connect to the device outputting HDMI (your Blu-ray player, Apple TV, gaming console, etc.). The other end connects to the display. You can use HDMI keystone jacks with active cables, but you must maintain the correct directional orientation through the wall. Label both ends before pulling cable.

HDMI Over Cat6 — The Better Solution for Long Runs

For runs over 25 feet carrying 4K, the professional solution is an HDMI-over-Cat6 balun system. You run Cat6 cable through the wall (same cable you're already pulling for network drops), then use balun adapters at each end to convert between HDMI and Cat6. This supports 4K @ 60Hz over 100+ feet of Cat6 with no signal degradation and costs less than a long active HDMI cable.

Mixing HDMI and Cat6 Keystones in the Same Wall Plate

One of the best features of the keystone system is the ability to mix connector types in a single wall plate. A conference room table wall plate might have: 2× Cat6 jacks (network), 1× HDMI keystone (display), 1× USB 3.0 keystone (charging), and 1× F81 coax (satellite feed) — all in a single 6-port keystone plate, all in matching white or black finish.

Installation Tips

  • Pull cable before drywalling whenever possible — retrofit installations through finished walls are significantly harder
  • Use a fish tape or push-pull rods for retrofit; a wiremold raceway if wall access is impossible
  • Never bend HDMI cable tighter than a 1-inch radius — it's thicker and stiffer than Cat6 and the conductors can crack
  • Use a 2-gang or 4-gang plate at equipment locations where multiple connections are needed
  • Label both ends of every cable before installing — finding the wrong cable in the wall after the fact is a major hassle
  • Test with your actual source device and display before closing up the wall

What You Need for a Complete In-Wall HDMI Run

  • 2× HDMI keystone jacks (one for source wall, one for display wall)
  • In-wall rated HDMI cable (CL2 or CL3 rated for in-wall use — required by NEC)
  • 2× keystone wall plates (match port count to your needs)
  • Cable clips or staples for securing cable inside walls
  • Low-voltage mounting brackets for new or old work boxes
