MacBook Pro Adapter Guide: Every Port, Every Display, 2016–2024
Apr 10, 2026
Apple's switch to USB-C only in 2016 was controversial. In 2026, it's just normal life — but navigating adapters and hubs still trips people up. This guide covers every MacBook Pro model from 2016 through 2024, what ports it has, and exactly what you need to connect to external displays and peripherals.
MacBook Pro 2016–2019: USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 Only
These models have between 2 and 4 USB-C ports (all Thunderbolt 3). There is no USB-A, no HDMI, no SD card slot, no MagSafe. Every external connection goes through USB-C.
What you need:
- External monitor: USB-C to HDMI adapter (4K@30Hz passive) or USB-C to DisplayPort cable (4K@60Hz)
- USB devices (mouse, drive, etc.): USB-C hub with USB-A ports — 4-port Koppa hub recommended
- Wired internet: USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet adapter
- Desk setup with monitor + peripherals + charging: Koppa 3-in-1 USB-C hub (HDMI + USB-A + USB-C charging)
- Projector (VGA): USB-C to VGA adapter
MacBook Pro 2021–2023: Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, SD Card, MagSafe
Apple partially reversed course. These models add a full-size HDMI port, an SD card slot, and MagSafe charging — while keeping 3 Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports. You can plug an HDMI monitor directly with no adapter.
What you still need:
- Multiple USB devices: USB-C hub with USB-A ports (the Thunderbolt 4 ports are USB-C)
- Wired internet: USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet (no built-in Ethernet)
- VGA projector: USB-C to VGA adapter (the HDMI port doesn't output VGA)
MacBook Pro 2024: Same as 2023
No port changes from 2023. HDMI 2.1 port (now supports 4K @ 144Hz on compatible displays), three Thunderbolt 4, MagSafe, SD card. USB-A devices still require a hub or adapter.
The Essentials Kit Most MacBook Pro Users Need
- USB-C hub with USB-A ports — for keyboards, mice, drives, and other USB-A peripherals
- USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet — for reliable wired internet at your desk
- USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort cable — if you have a 2016–2019 model without HDMI
- USB-C to VGA adapter — for conference rooms and classrooms with VGA projectors
