Battery Cable Lugs for Cars, Trucks & EVs: Complete Sizing Guide (2026)
Apr 04, 2026
Every vehicle battery connection relies on a compression lug to transfer hundreds of amps from the battery to the starter motor, alternator, and electrical system. A bad lug — corroded, undersized, or poorly crimped — causes voltage drop, hard starting, and intermittent electrical failures. This guide covers how to select the right battery cable lug for any vehicle application.
Battery cable sizing by vehicle type
| Vehicle | Battery Cable | Stud Size | CT Lug SKU | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact car (Civic, Corolla) | 4 AWG | 5/16" | 6221-04-0516-NP | $2.48 |
| Mid-size car (Camry, Accord) | 2 AWG | 3/8" | 6221-02-038-NP | $2.48 |
| Full-size truck (F-150, Silverado) | 1/0 AWG | 3/8" | 6221-010-038-NP | $2.48 |
| HD truck (F-250, 2500) | 2/0 AWG | 3/8" | 6221-020-038-NP | $2.48 |
| Diesel truck (dual battery) | 2/0-4/0 AWG | 3/8" | 6221-040-038-NP | $2.48 |
| RV house battery | 2/0-4/0 AWG | 3/8" | 6221-040-038-NP | $2.48 |

Tinned vs bare copper — when it matters
Bare copper (NP) — Maximum conductivity. Use for standard automotive, industrial, and indoor applications where corrosion is not a primary concern. The compression crimp creates a gas-tight seal that prevents internal oxidation.
Tinned copper (TP) — Tin plating provides an additional layer of corrosion protection on exposed surfaces. Required for marine applications (ABYC E-11), recommended for outdoor, under-hood, and any application exposed to salt, moisture, or chemical vapors. The tin layer prevents surface oxidation on the lug tongue and barrel exterior.
Both versions are available in every AWG size and stud configuration at the same $2.48 price point.
Stud size reference
| Stud Size | Bolt Size | Common Applications |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4" (#14) | 1/4"-20 | Small equipment, accessories, grounding |
| 5/16" (#16) | 5/16"-18 | Battery posts (most cars), starter motor, alternator |
| 3/8" (#24) | 3/8"-16 | Heavy truck batteries, marine, industrial, bus bars |
| 1/2" (#32) | 1/2"-13 | Industrial batteries, large switchgear, bus connections |
$2.48 per lug — every size, every configuration
The Conversions Tech 6221 series is flat-priced at $2.48 per lug across all AWG sizes (1 through 4/0) and all stud sizes (1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 1/2"). Compare this to auto parts store pricing of $5-15 per lug for the exact same product, or $8-15 for Burndy YA equivalents at an electrical supply house.
For shops, fleets, and installers doing volume work, Pro Pricing brings additional savings on top of the already-low $2.48 base price.
