Cat6 vs Cat6A vs Cat7 vs Cat8: Which Ethernet Cable Do You Need?
The straight answer by speed, distance, budget and environment — from the desk that stocks all four. 5-minute read.
The 30-second answer
Side by side
| Spec | Cat6 (CT 550MHz) | Cat6A | Cat7 S/FTP | Cat8 S/FTP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bandwidth | 550 MHz | 500 MHz | 600 MHz | 2000 MHz |
| Max speed | 10 Gbps | 10 Gbps @ 100m | 10 Gbps @ 100m | 40 Gbps @ 30m |
| Shielding | UTP | UTP/FTP | S/FTP | S/FTP |
| PoE++ (90W) | Good | Better — cooler in bundles | Better | Best |
| Typical use | Offices, homes, cameras | New commercial pulls, WiFi 6E/7 APs | EMI-heavy, slim runs | Rack-to-server, SAN |
| Patch price | from $0.81 | $$ | $$ | from $4.39 |
Choose by scenario
Office or home network, camera systems, general drops: Cat6. Our enhanced 550 MHz spec doubles standard Cat6 bandwidth, so it runs 10 Gbps where standard Cat6 tops out — Cat6A performance at Cat6 pricing. Cat6 patch cables · Cat6 bulk
New commercial construction and access points: Cat6A. TIA recommends it for new installs; the alien-crosstalk headroom matters in dense bundles feeding WiFi 6E/7 APs at PoE++ power. Cat6A patch options
Machine shops, broadcast, dense racks with EMI: Cat7 S/FTP. Per-pair foil plus overall braid kills crosstalk; our super-slim 26 AWG profile also routes where standard cable will not. Cat7 slim patch cables
Data center interconnects under 30 meters: Cat8 — 40GBASE-T at a fraction of fiber transceiver cost for short reach, backward compatible to Cat5e. Cat8 patch cables
Three mistakes that cost real money
Buying CCA for PoE. Copper-clad aluminum has ~40% higher resistance — it overheats in PoE bundles and fails UL. Every CT patch cable is bare copper; we sell CCA only clearly labeled for non-PoE, budget drops.
Paying for Cat8 on a 60m run. Cat8 is a 30m spec. Past 30m you get Cat6A performance at Cat8 prices — buy Cat6A instead, or fiber for the backbone.
Jacket rating mismatch. Air-handling spaces need CMP plenum, riser shafts CMR — an inspector will make you re-pull. Bulk boxes in both: bulk cable.
