Distributor Product Knowledge Program

For counter staff, inside sales and branch managers: read what a contractor asks for, translate any major-brand part number to a CT equivalent, complete the sale with the attach items the job actually needs, and know when to route to the engineering desk. Approx. 60 minutes.

MODULE 1 — READ THE REQUEST
1.1 Decode the counter language
“A 4/0 two-hole long barrel” = compression lug, 4/0 AWG, two-hole NEMA palm, long barrel — you still need the stud size and spacing. “A half-inch EMT connector, compression” = raceway fitting, not a lug. “Something to tap a 500 off a service” = insulated multi-tap or mechanical tap, ask the branch count and conductor material. The pattern: function → conductor → interface → environment. Get all four and the SKU picks itself; miss one and the return counter picks it for you.
1.2 The four questions that finish every lug sale
1) Copper or aluminum conductor? (drives dual-rating) 2) Wire size — and flex class if it's welding/battery cable. 3) Stud size, one hole or two — and spacing if two. 4) Crimp or set-screw — do they have the tool and die? Question 4 is the attach machine: die sets, crimpers, inhibitor, covers.
Knowledge check: Contractor asks for “a 2/0 lug.” List the four questions before you can pull a SKU.

MODULE 2 — CROSS-REFERENCE LIKE AN ENGINEER
2.1 Anatomy of major-brand part numbers
Most legacy lug part numbers encode conductor size, hole count and stud in the digits — once you see the pattern you can translate at the counter. CT equivalents map by four attributes: conductor size → barrel; stud → ØH; palm → 1H/2H + spacing; barrel length. When the number won't decode, the engineering desk returns a verified cross with a side-by-side spec table — typically same business day. Never guess a cross on utility or spec-driven work; send it in.
2.2 What “equivalent” must mean
A defensible cross matches: conductor range, stud/palm geometry, UL 486A/B listing status, temperature rating, and plating. “Fits the wire” is not equivalence. CT publishes the drawing letters (TD-01) precisely so your customer's engineer can verify the cross on paper before the PO.
Knowledge check: Name three attributes a lug cross-reference must match beyond wire size.

MODULE 3 — THE FAMILIES, IN ONE PAGE EACH
3.1 Compression lugs (210-980xx / 6400)
8 AWG–1000 MCM, tin-plated seamless copper, sight windows, die color embossed. Short barrel = branch/equipment; long barrel + two-hole = feeders, gear, utility. Attach: die sets, 12-ton crimpers, heat-shrink.
3.2 Mechanical & insulated (taps, covered lugs)
Dual-rated AL9CU set-screw bodies — retrofit and service work, torque-stamped. Insulated multi-taps kill split-bolt-and-tape labor; covered lugs make touch-safe terminations. Attach: torque tools, hex keys, oxide inhibitor.
3.3 Grounding, raceway, tray, solar
Grounding: clamps, rods, bonding (CT-26). Raceway: EMT/IMC/rigid + every fitting (CT-30). Tray: 186-part wire-mesh system (CT-27). Solar: full BOS array-to-POI (CT-31) — the growth category; every counter should know string fuses, MC4 classes, and isolators exist on the shelf.
MODULE 4 — SELL THE SYSTEM, NOT THE SKU
4.1 Attach maps that double ticket size
Lugs → dies, crimper, inhibitor, covers, heat-shrink. Combiner box → string fuses (spares!), SPD replacement modules, isolator, PV wire by the meter. Tray run → couplers, supports every 5 ft, covers, grounding kit. MC4 order → spanners and a crimper on EVERY first-time order — a plier-installed MC4 is a warranty claim wearing a disguise.
4.2 When to route to the engineering desk
Route immediately: utility/spec-driven crosses, takeoffs over 20 lines, anything 1500 V DC, gas-spring sizing, submittal packages. The desk returns priced line-by-line quotes in 48 hours — your customer gets an engineered answer with your name on the follow-up.
Knowledge check: A first-time solar customer orders 50 MC4 pairs and nothing else. What do you say?

Confirm 1000 V vs 1500 V class, then attach the MC4 crimper and spanner set — explain that plier-made terminations void the IP67 rating and are the top field-failure cause.

5.1 Pricing tiers, stock program, certification
