HDMI Cable vs Active Optical vs Extender: The Distance Decision

4K signal from source to screen — the right technology for every distance from 3 to 900 feet, with real prices. 5-minute read.

The rule of distance

0–25ft: copper HDMI cable. 25–50ft: heavier-gauge or CL3 copper. 50–300ft: Active Optical (AOC) for a one-cable path, or an HDBaseT extender over Cat6. 300ft+: extender, full stop. 4K@60Hz needs 18 Gbps — passive copper physically cannot carry that past roughly 25 feet.

Choose by scenario

Conference room, church, signage (50–300ft, one clean run): AOC — fiber inside an HDMI connector, zero signal loss at any listed length, no power needed. Directional: mark source/display ends before the pull. Active Optical cables

Same distances but you want control, or Cat6 already exists: HDBaseT extender — 4K 60Hz over one Cat6 to 328ft with bidirectional IR and RS-232, Power over Cable so only one end needs an outlet. Almost always the cheapest 100ft+ path when walls are closed. HDMI extenders

One source to many displays: splitter (1x2 to 1x8, HDCP 2.2) near the source, then extend each leg as above. HDMI splitters

Three failure points we see weekly

HDCP handshakes: every device in the chain must pass HDCP 2.2 for protected 4K — one old splitter blanks the whole system. All CT distribution gear passes 2.2.

AOC installed backward: the ends are directional; a reversed pull through conduit is an expensive afternoon.

Extenders on CCA Cat6: HDBaseT power-over-cable needs bare copper. Runs on copper-clad aluminum drop out intermittently — the worst kind of service call.
