Where it's required
- Metal water piping bonded to the service grounding electrode system — NEC 250.104(A)
- Continuity around equipment likely to be removed — NEC 250.68(B) requires the bonding jumper around the water heater, meter, and filters
- Jurisdictions citing the water heater jumper for gas-piping bonding via the appliance — NEC 250.104(B)
How to install
Clean the pipe to bare metal, mount one clamp on the cold inlet and one on the hot outlet upstream of any dielectric union, land the bonding conductor in each clamp's lay-in saddle, and torque the clamp screws. Size the conductor from Table 250.102(C)(1) (commonly 6 or 4 AWG on residential services). Keep the clamps accessible. Code detail: Grounding Accessories and the NEC.
