Electrical Enclosures & Weatherproof Boxes: NEMA Ratings, Applications, and Contractor Pricing
Apr 20, 2026
The right enclosure protects your electrical connections from moisture, dust, impact, and tampering. The wrong one costs you callbacks, code violations, and unhappy customers. Here's how to choose.
NEMA Ratings: What They Actually Mean
NEMA ratings tell you where an enclosure can be installed. The most common ratings for electrical contractors:
- NEMA 1: Indoor general purpose. Protects against accidental contact. Office buildings, residential panels.
- NEMA 3R: Outdoor rated. Rain, sleet, ice protection. Most outdoor disconnects and panels use 3R.
- NEMA 4/4X: Watertight. Hosedown environments, food processing, car washes. 4X adds corrosion resistance.
- NEMA 12: Industrial. Dust, dripping water, oil. Manufacturing floors, warehouses.
Weatherproof Boxes for Outdoor Receptacles
NEC requires weatherproof covers on all outdoor receptacles. Our single and dual-gang weatherproof boxes use advanced polycarbonate construction with UV resistance, impact rating, and UL listing. Clear covers provide visibility while maintaining the weather seal. Gaskets and mounting hardware included.
Junction Boxes and Pull Boxes
Every splice needs a box. Every transition needs a box. We stock steel and PVC junction boxes from 4x4 to 12x12, with knockouts for standard trade sizes. Hinged covers, screw covers, and blank covers available.
Solar and Clean Energy Enclosures
Solar installations have unique enclosure needs: combiner boxes rated for DC voltage, disconnect enclosures that handle the heat of rooftop mounting, and NEMA 4X boxes for ground-mount installations exposed to weather year-round. Our solar combiner boxes come pre-wired with fuse holders, reducing your installation time.
Pricing That Makes Sense
A single-gang weatherproof box at the supply house runs $6-12. Ours start at $2.75. On a 50-unit residential development, that's $162-462 in savings on weatherproof boxes alone. Multiply that across junction boxes, pull boxes, and enclosures, and you're looking at meaningful savings on every bid.
