This 10 in nitrogen gas spring (gas strut, lift support) holds light lids, lift-up cabinet doors, toolbox lids and small hatches. It comes in 50 N or 100 N. Buy a pair to mount one on each side and avoid side load.

Force per spring: F1 (N) = 9.81 × (RH × m) / (2 × N × X2) + 5, where m = lid mass in kg, RH = opening length in m, X2 = lever arm in m, and N = number of springs. Round up to the next available force. For a 90° opening, stroke ≈ RH / 3. 1 kg ≈ 10 N ≈ 2.2 lbf.
