Aluminum Splicer/Reducers: When and How to Use Them
Quick answer: a splicer/reducer joins or reduces conductors (copper or aluminum) in a dual-rated set-screw barrel - the fastest code-accepted way to splice, extend, or transition conductors from 14 AWG through 350+ kcmil without a crimping tool.
What is a splicer/reducer?
A tin-plated aluminum barrel with two set-screw ports that accepts a conductor in each end. "Splicer" because it joins two same-size conductors; "reducer" because each port accepts the full range - so a 6 AWG–4/0 unit can take 4/0 on one side and 6 AWG on the other. AL9CU dual rating means copper and aluminum conductors, in any combination, without galvanic corrosion. UL 486B class, 600V, 90°C.

When NOT to use one
Buried or concealed grounding electrode conductor splices require irreversible compression or exothermic welding per NEC 250.64(C) - a set-screw splice is not permitted there. For high-vibration or direct-burial power splices, use a listed compression splice with heat-shrink.
How to install (60 seconds)
- Strip conductors to the barrel depth (no nicked strands).
- Brush aluminum conductors and apply oxide inhibitor per manufacturer instructions.
- Insert fully, torque set screws to the listed spec (NEC 110.14 requires following torque values).
- Insulate the barrel to the conductor's insulation rating - two half-lapped layers of quality tape or heat-shrink.
