What size wire do I need?
Understanding AWG wire sizes
American Wire Gauge (AWG) is the standard system for measuring wire diameter in the US and Canada. The gauge number is inversely related to diameter. For every 6-gauge decrease, diameter doubles and cross-sectional area quadruples. For every 3-gauge decrease, area doubles.
NEC ampacity ratings
NEC Table 310.16 provides ampacity at 60, 75, and 90 degrees C. Most installations use 75C terminations per NEC 110.14(C), so the 75C column is most commonly referenced.
Voltage drop
NEC recommends branch circuit voltage drop not exceed 3%, and total drop not exceed 5% per NEC 210.19(A) Informational Note No. 4.
