Zim — MPO/MTP Multimode Fiber Optic Trunk & Breakout Cable
The MPO/MTP multimode fiber optic assembly is a high-density backbone interconnect for data centers, SAN fabrics, enterprise LANs, and carrier networks implementing parallel optics. The cable core utilizes Corning ClearCurve® 50/125 µm multimode glass for reduced macrobend loss, reinforced with DuPont™ Kevlar® aramid yarn strength members to achieve a tensile rating of 80 N without compromising optical geometry. A 3.0 mm LSZH jacket supports fire-safety compliance (CE CPR EN 50575), while precision MPO/UPC female ferrules deliver ≤0.35 dB insertion loss and ≥30 dB return loss in accordance with Telcordia GR-326-CORE and TIA-605-4 (FOCIS 5). Default build ships as Type B polarity, UPC, female (pinless), optimized for 40G/100G SR4 and SWDM deployments over OM3 (Aqua), OM4 (Magenta), and OM5 (Lime Green).

Technical FAQ — Zim MPO/MTP Multimode Fiber Assemblies
MPO vs MTP — what’s the difference?Connectors
MPO is the standardized multi-fiber push-on interface (IEC 61754-7 / TIA-604-5, FOCIS 5). MTP® is a high-tolerance MPO-compatible implementation featuring tighter geometry control and enhanced ferrule/spring designs. Zim assemblies use MPO/UPC female connectors intermateable with compliant MPO/MTP systems.
Which polarity does the cable ship with?Polarity
Default: Type B, UPC, female (pinless), recommended for parallel optics (SR4). Type A and Type C mappings are available on request for duplex-centric environments.
What are the guaranteed IL/RL values?Optical Loss
- Insertion Loss: ≤0.35 dB (≤0.30 dB typical) per MPO interface
- Return Loss: ≥30 dB (MMF/UPC)
OM3 vs OM4 vs OM5 — selection guidance?Fiber Classes
| Class | Core | Bandwidth (EMBc) | Use Case | Color |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OM3 | 50/125 µm | ≥2000 MHz·km | 10G/40G short reach | Aqua |
| OM4 | 50/125 µm | ≥4700 MHz·km | Extended 40G/100G SR4 | Magenta |
| OM5 | 50/125 µm | ≥4700 MHz·km @ 850 nm | SWDM (850–953 nm) duplex savings | Lime Green |
Minimum bend radius and handling?Bend Radius
Fiber core: ≥10 mm • Cable OD 3.0 mm: ≥7.5 mm (≥10×OD dynamic best practice). ClearCurve® mitigates bend loss but does not eliminate it—avoid tight zip-ties and panel pinch points.
Environmental ratings?Environment
Operating: −10 to +70 °C • Storage: −40 to +85 °C • Tensile: 80 N • Jacket: LSZH (CE CPR EN 50575), RoHS, WEEE.
Breakout options and default branch lengths?Breakout
MPO–MPO trunks or MPO–LC/SC/FC/ST fanouts. Default LC branch length is 0.6–1.0 m. Fanout legs are aramid-reinforced (1.6–2.0 mm) for rack routing and strain relief.
Gender and guide pins — do I need male or female?Gender
Default is female (pinless). Many transceivers mate via adapters to male-pinned patch cords. Verify cassette/transceiver pin requirements before ordering.
Transceiver ⇄ Adapter ⇄ Male-pinned patch ⇄ Adapter ⇄ Female trunk
What testing is performed on each assembly?QA
- Endface/geometry via interferometer per IEC 61300-3-35
- IL/RL test at 850/1300 nm
- 200–400× visual inspection
- Serialized test report available on request
Customization and ordering guidance?Custom
