Rigid vs EMT Couplings: Threaded, Set-Screw, and Compression — Which Coupling for Which Raceway

"Coupling" covers four different fittings that are not interchangeable. Ordering the wrong one is the most common return we see in conduit fittings. Products: EMT & Rigid Couplings.
The four couplings

Why they don't interchange
EMT and rigid have different outside diameters at the same trade size: 1" EMT is 1.163" OD, 1" rigid is 1.315". An EMT compression coupling will not close on rigid; a rigid threadless coupling will not seal on EMT. Threaded couplings need threaded pipe — EMT cannot be threaded (358.12). Buy by raceway type first, size second.
Bonding through couplings
All four are listed as part of the equipment grounding path when made up tight (250.118). Threaded couplings must be made wrench-tight; set-screw and compression must be tightened as the manufacturer specifies. Where the run serves as the EGC in a wet location or on a rooftop, prefer raintight compression — corrosion at a loose coupling is an open ground.
Combination and transition couplings
EMT-to-flex combination couplings join EMT to flexible metal conduit at a motor, transformer, or vibrating equipment (a set-screw end for the EMT, a screw-in or clamp end for FMC). EMT-to-rigid transitions use a threaded coupling with a set-screw or compression EMT adapter.
