RG6 Quad Shield vs Dual Shield, Bare Copper vs CCS: Coax That Holds Up
Oct 06, 2026
RG6 is the default 75 Ω coax for CATV, satellite, broadband and analog or HD-over-coax cameras. Inside that one name, though, there are real differences in shielding, center conductor and connectors that decide whether a drop runs clean for years or brings back a service call.
Dual shield vs quad shield
Dual shield RG6 has a foil layer and one braid. Quad shield adds a second foil and a second braid. The extra layers improve shielding effectiveness against ingress (outside RF getting in) and egress (signal leaking out). That matters most in noisy environments: near LTE and 5G transmitters, motors and VFDs, fluorescent and LED drivers, or long runs alongside power. For a short indoor jumper, dual shield is usually fine; for satellite, long runs and commercial installs, quad shield is cheap insurance.
Bare copper vs copper-clad steel center conductor
Most RG6 uses an 18 AWG copper-clad steel (CCS) center conductor. At RF frequencies the signal rides on the copper skin, so CCS performs well for TV and broadband. The difference appears when the coax also carries DC power:
- Satellite LNBs and multiswitches powered from the receiver
- In-line amplifiers powered over the line
- Power-over-coax (PoC) security cameras
Steel has many times the DC resistance of copper, so long CCS runs can drop enough voltage to make LNBs and PoC cameras drop out. A bare copper center conductor fixes that.
Connectors
Compression F connectors are the professional standard: a tool compresses a sleeve around the jacket for a 360° weatherproof seal and strong pull-out retention. Crimp hex connectors leave gaps and loosen; twist-on connectors have no place in a commercial install. Every connector should be matched to the cable's jacket diameter and shield type (quad shield needs quad-rated connectors).
Ratings
Indoor building runs need cable listed for the space under NEC Article 820: CATV for general use, CATVR riser, CATVP plenum. Most RG6 is also marked CM. Outdoor and aerial runs need UV-resistant jacketing, and buried runs need flooded or direct-burial cable.
Ordering to length
Our custom RG6 jumpers are quad shield with an 18 AWG bare copper center conductor, weatherproof F compression connectors on both ends, continuity and short tested, 3 to 200 ft in black or white. Labeled and bagged sets for MDU, hospitality and security integrators are available on request. For bulk runs, see our 1000 ft reels and the full custom cable line, or send a cut list to the engineering desk at 307-206-0534.
