HDMI 2.1 features (4K 120 Hz for consoles and PCs, VRR, ALLM, eARC at full bandwidth) require an Ultra High Speed certified cable end to end; a Premium cable will negotiate down or drop out. The passive numbers are what works in practice with a cable that meets its certification and equipment on both ends within spec; marketing lengths on boxes assume a strong source. A projector at the end of a 40 ft run is the classic failure: the fix is a 40 ft fiber AOC, not a thicker copper cable.
Why distance drops with bandwidth
HDMI TMDS signalling sends up to 6 Gbps per lane on four lanes (18 Gbps) or 12 Gbps per lane on four lanes with FRL (48 Gbps). Copper attenuation and inter-symbol interference rise with frequency, so the eye diagram at the display closes sooner on a fast signal. A 24 AWG cable has less resistance per foot but more capacitance, which is why heavy cables help at 18 Gbps and stop helping at 48. Active cables restore the signal with an equalizer at the display end; fiber converts to light in the source connector and back at the display, so length costs almost nothing.
In-wall rules
- NEC 725 and 800: any cable inside a wall, floor or ceiling must carry a CL2, CL3, CM or higher rating; plenum spaces require CL2P, CL3P or CMP. An unrated HDMI jacket in a wall is a code violation and fails inspection and, in a fire, the insurer's review.
- Fiber AOC in-wall must also be rated (CL3 or OFNP hybrid) and its connectors cannot be field-terminated, so leave a pull string and route with a service loop.
- HDBaseT is the in-wall answer for anything over 25 ft: pull Cat6A CMP or CMR, which is cheaper than rated HDMI, and terminate at a wall plate.
- Directional cables (active copper, AOC) fail if reversed; label the ends before the drywall goes up.
Troubleshooting a long run
- Blank screen, sparkles or intermittent drop at 4K 60 and fine at 1080p: bandwidth limit reached; step to active copper or AOC.
- Works from a receiver, fails from a media player: weak 5 V on the source port; use an AOC with a USB power tail.
- Works until HDR is enabled: the cable is High Speed, not Premium; replace.
- 4K 120 fails on a new console: cable is not Ultra High Speed certified; the version on the box is not the certification.
- Fails only after a long copper run through a wall: check that a coupler or wall plate was not inserted; each passive coupler costs about 3 ft of budget.
