Which Starlink mount is right for an RV?
Fixed outdoor kit — the permanent answer: vibration-rated hardware that survives washboard roads and highway miles, bolted to roof structure. Choose this for full-timers and fleet units. Magnetic (55 lb pull) — for steel surfaces: holds at highway speed, lifts off in seconds for stealth camping or car-washes. Most RV roofs are fiberglass or rubber, so magnetic suits tow vehicles and trucks more than coaches. Suction — glass, gelcoat, and rentals: tool-free and damage-free, re-seat before each travel day. For boats, rail-mount using the fixed kit's hardware beats suction in chop.
How do you run the Starlink cable through an RV roof?
- Pick the spot. Flat roof section, clear of framing, tanks, and wiring — verify from inside before drilling. Shortest clean path to the router/power location wins.
- Drill and deburr. Size the hole to the bushing body, not the bare cable.
- Install a clamping cable-entry bushing. A proper CAT6 entry bushing grips the jacket and takes mechanical strain off the connector; a bare grommet does neither and chafes through in a season.
- Form a drip loop. Route the cable so it dips below the entry point outside — water follows cable, and the loop makes it drip off before the hole.
- Seal with self-leveling lap sealant. Flow it over the flange and fastener heads. Do not use silicone: it does not bond to EPDM/TPO rubber roofs and peels within seasons, taking your watertight seal with it.
How should you power Starlink in an RV?
Hardwire it as a DC load. Either a 12V→48V step-up converter (IP68 versions can live outside) or a 150W GigE PoE injector wired to the house bank through a fused circuit — 15A blade fuse within 7 inches of the battery, 14 AWG to 10 ft or 12 AWG to 20 ft, and a 5-pin illuminated rocker switch as a dish kill switch. Where should the router go?
