MC4 Solar Connector Guide: Types, Installation, and Compatibility (2026)

MC4 connectors are the universal standard for photovoltaic panel interconnections. Named for their manufacturer (Multi-Contact, now Staubli) and 4mm contact pin diameter, MC4 connectors provide weatherproof, tool-free mating connections rated for the high DC voltages and outdoor exposure conditions inherent to solar installations.

MC4 connector specifications

Spec Rating
Voltage 1000V DC (1500V on select models)
Current 30A continuous (45A on select models)
IP rating IP67 (submersible)
Wire range 10-14 AWG (2.5-6mm2)
Contact Silver-plated copper, 4mm pin
Housing PPO/PA, UV resistant, -40C to +85C
Lifespan 25+ years outdoor rated

Types of MC4 connectors

Standard MC4 pairs: Male and female connectors for panel-to-cable and cable-to-cable connections. The snap-lock mechanism provides tool-free mating and requires an MC4 disconnect tool for separation, preventing accidental disconnection.

Branch connectors (Y/T): Y-connectors split one cable into two parallel connections for string wiring. T-connectors add a third branch. Essential for parallel panel configurations and optimizers.

Extension cables: Pre-terminated PV wire with MC4 connectors on both ends. Available in standard lengths from 10ft to 50ft. Use 10 AWG PV wire for runs over 30 feet to minimize voltage drop.

Inline fuse holders: MC4-compatible fuse holders that insert inline for string-level overcurrent protection per NEC 690.9.

Adapters: MC4 to Anderson Powerpole, MC4 to ring terminal, MC4 to bare wire, and MC4 to MC3 legacy adapters.

Installation best practices

Always crimp MC4 contacts with a dedicated MC4 crimp tool — not generic pliers or crimpers. A proper crimp ensures gas-tight contact with the conductor strands and prevents pull-out under tension. Strip PV wire to the exact length specified by the connector manufacturer (typically 6-8mm). Over-stripping exposes bare conductor inside the connector housing and compromises the IP67 seal.

Never mix MC4 connectors from different manufacturers in the same string. While physically compatible, subtle differences in contact geometry and spring tension can cause elevated resistance at the junction, leading to hot spots and potential arc faults.
