90°, 45°, and Straight Compression Lugs — When to Bend the Barrel

A straight compression lug is the default. A bent one is a fix for geometry: the conductor has to arrive from a direction the pad does not face, and there is not enough room to sweep the cable through its minimum bend radius. Knowing which bend to specify — 90°, 45°, or none — saves a return trip and a mangled cable. Products: 90° Flag Lugs.

The bend-radius problem

NEC 312.6 and Table 312.6(A)/(B) set minimum wire-bending space at terminals inside cabinets and enclosures — for 4/0 AWG landing on a lug that faces the wall of the cabinet, that is 4–5 inches of clear space per conductor; for 500 kcmil it is 6–8 inches. Cable manufacturers publish their own minimum bend radii (typically 8× overall diameter for jacketed power cable, 12× for shielded and MV). When the enclosure does not give you that room, a bent-barrel lug moves the bend into the lug itself, where it is a forged geometry rather than a stressed conductor.

90° flag lugs

The barrel is turned a full 90° to the tongue, so the conductor runs parallel to the mounting surface and enters from the side. Typical placements:

  • Panelboard and switchgear main lugs where the pad faces the back of the can and the feeder comes in from the top or bottom
  • Transformer terminal compartments and CT cabinets with shallow depth
  • Battery, UPS, and inverter DC connections where the cable tray runs along the pad
  • Ground bars and bus bars in telecom shelters and data rooms where cable runs down the wall
  • Motor terminal boxes and generator breakers with side entry

Ratings match the straight lug of the same size: UL 486A/B, 90°C, 600 V to 35 kV, same Burndy-index dies, same crimp count. The tongue may be offset ("flag") or inline; short-barrel versions take one crimp and fit the tightest spaces, long-barrel versions take two crimps for higher pull-out and vibration resistance.

45° lugs

A 45° barrel splits the difference: the conductor enters at a diagonal, which is what you need when the cable comes off a tray or a conduit stub at an angle, or when a 90° lug would bury the barrel against an adjacent phase. They are common in cell-site and telecom ground bars, motor control centers, and EV charger cabinets. Burndy offers them as the YA-L-45 family and in two-hole FX45 versions; Panduit and T&B offer equivalents. They are ordered far less often than 90° — roughly one 45° for every eight to ten 90° lugs in distributor movement — so most stock programs carry 45° only in the sizes that dominate telecom and switchgear work: 6 AWG through 4/0, with 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" studs.

Installation notes

  1. Bent lugs are crimped exactly like straight ones: strip to barrel depth, insert to the inspection window, crimp with the stamped die index, the marked number of crimps, starting at the tongue end.
  2. Orient the barrel before crimping — once crimped, the flag cannot be rotated on the conductor.
  3. Land with flat washer + lock washer (or Belleville on aluminum bus) and torque to the stud size per UL 486A / the equipment label.
  4. Keep the phase-to-phase clearance: a 90° barrel projects sideways; on close-spaced lugs alternate flag direction or step to 45°.
