Cat6 vs Cat6A vs Cat8 Patch Cables: Bandwidth, Distance, Bare Copper vs CCA, and How to Spec a Closet
Sep 05, 2026
Patch cords are the last three feet of every link and the first thing that fails a certification test. This guide is for installers and IT buyers choosing between Cat6, Cat6A, and Cat8 jumpers by the box: what each category actually delivers, where the marketing gets ahead of the spec, and how to pick length, color, and construction so the closet passes on the first walk. Products: Cat6 patch cables · Cat8 patch cables.
1. What the categories mean
| Cat6 | Cat6A | Cat8 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spec bandwidth (TIA-568) | 250 MHz | 500 MHz | 2000 MHz |
| Guaranteed data rate | 1 Gbps to 100 m; 10 Gbps to 37–55 m | 10 Gbps to 100 m | 25/40 Gbps to 30 m |
| Construction | UTP (or F/UTP) | UTP or F/UTP, larger OD | S/FTP, always shielded |
| Typical use | Desktop, AP, camera, patching in the rack | 10G backbone in the building, PoE++ runs | Top-of-rack switch to server, SAN, short DAC replacement |
| Connector | RJ45 | RJ45 | RJ45 (Cat8.1) — backward compatible |
The 550 MHz figure on our Cat6 jumpers is a tested headroom number above the 250 MHz category requirement. It does not turn Cat6 into Cat6A, but it does mean the cord carries 10GBASE-T over patch-length runs with margin, which is where 10 Gbps on Cat6 actually lives: in the rack, not in the wall.
2. Bare copper vs CCA — the one spec that matters
Copper-clad aluminum (CCA) cordage is cheaper and shows up in marketplace listings that never say "CCA." It has roughly 60% higher DC resistance than bare copper, fails PoE power budgets (IEEE 802.3bt Type 3/4 needs 24 AWG bare copper for the heat math), work-hardens and cracks at the plug, and is not UL Listed as a communications cable. Every Conversions Tech patch cord is 24 AWG stranded bare copper, UL Listed, so the same cord you patch a switch with will also power a PoE++ access point or PTZ camera.
3. Choosing length
- 0.5–1 ft: switch-to-patch-panel in the same rack unit; use for high-density 1U/2U panels.
- 3–5 ft: the standard rack jumper; covers any panel-to-switch pair in a 42U cabinet.
- 7–14 ft: wall jack to desktop, AP drops from a ceiling box, camera pigtails.
- 25–100 ft: temporary and light-commercial runs where a horizontal cable isn't pulled. Note that a 100 ft Cat6 cord plus 90 m of horizontal exceeds the 100 m channel; stay inside the channel budget if the link will be certified.
For Cat8, the 30 m channel limit is the whole point: keep total length under 30 m including both patch cords, or the 40GBASE-T link will not train.
4. Color as documentation
Color is the cheapest labeling you will ever buy. A common scheme: blue data, gray voice/VoIP, yellow PoE/cameras, red uplinks and critical infrastructure, white customer-facing/AV, black management/OOB. Whatever scheme you pick, put it in the closet drawing and stock all lengths in every color so nobody substitutes. We stock six colors from 1 ft to 100 ft in Cat6.
5. Flat vs round Cat8
Round S/FTP is the reference construction and the right choice for cabinets, cable managers, and anything that will be bundled. Flat Cat8 runs under carpet and along desk edges without kinking and fits behind wall-mounted switches; it is not for bundles or vertical managers, where the flat profile stacks badly and the shield can crease.
6. Snagless boots, T568B, and shielded plug grounding
Snagless boots protect the latch during pulls through a cable manager and are worth it on every cord that will be moved more than once. All our cords are T568B on both ends. Shielded Cat6A and Cat8 cords bond the shield through the plug shell to the jack; the rack and panel must be grounded (TIA-607) or the shield becomes an antenna. Unshielded Cat6 has no such requirement, which is one reason it remains the default for general patching.
