RG6 Coaxial Cable: Installation Guide for CATV, Satellite & Security (2026)

RG6 coaxial remains the standard for cable television, satellite, and analog security camera systems. This guide covers cable selection, connector types, and signal loss management.

RG6 Cable Specifications

Spec Standard RG6 Quad Shield
Impedance 75 ohm 75 ohm
Center conductor 18 AWG CCS 18 AWG CCS
Shielding 60% braid + foil Dual foil + dual braid 90%+
Frequency 5 MHz - 3 GHz 5 MHz - 3 GHz
Loss @ 1GHz/100ft ~5.6 dB ~5.6 dB

Always use quad-shield in commercial environments for EMI rejection.

Compression vs Crimp

Compression connectors are the professional standard — weatherproof, mechanically secure, and consistent. Crimp connectors are faster but prone to quality issues. For professional installations, compression is the only acceptable method.

Splitter Selection

Every 2-way split costs ~3.5 dB. A 4-way costs 7 dB. For systems with 4+ drops, use a distribution amplifier. For satellite, use 5-2150 MHz rated splitters.

Installation Tips

Maintain 6x cable diameter bend radius (~2.5 inches for RG6). Keep 12 inches minimum from AC power lines. Use UV-rated cable and weatherproof connectors for outdoor runs.
